The Story of Father\'s Day
Father\'s Day, contrary to (与...相反) popular misconception (误解), was
not established (建立) as a holiday in order to help greeting card
manufacturers (贺卡生产商) sell more cards. In fact when a "father\'s
day" was first proposed (被提议) there were no Father\'s Day cards!
Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a
"father\'s day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor (向...
表示敬意) her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War
veteran (老军人), was widowed (丧偶)when his wife (Mrs. Dodd\'s
mother) died in childbirth (出生) with their sixth child. Mr. Smart
was left to raise (抚养) the newborn (新生的) and his other five
children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It
was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult (成人)that she realized (意识) the
strength (力量) and selflessness (无私) her father had shown in
raising his children as a single parent (单亲父母).
The first Father\'s Day was observed (被庆祝)on June 19, 1910 in Spokane
Washington. At about the same time in various (不同的)towns and
cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate (庆祝
)a "father\'s day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported (支持
)the idea of a national (全国性的)Father\'s Day. Finally in 1966
President Lyndon Johnson signed (签署) a presidential (总统的
)proclamation (公告) declaring (宣布)the 3rd Sunday of June as Father\'s
Day.
Father\'s Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all
men who act as (担任) a father figure(父亲角色). Stepfathers (继父),
uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends (成人男性朋友) are all
honored on Father\'s Day.
父亲节的来源
与目前流行的概念非常不同﹐当初﹐父亲节并不是一个可以让贺卡制造商售出更多
贺卡的节日。实际上﹐父亲节首次被提出的时侯﹐这世上还没有父亲节贺卡。
住在华盛顿的John B. Dodd 夫人﹐于1909年首次提出父亲节的想法。当时﹐她希
望有一个特别的日子﹐来向她的父亲 William Smart 先生表达敬意。
William Smart 先生是一个参加过南北战争的老兵。他的妻子﹐也就是John B.
Dodd夫人的母亲﹐在生第六个孩子时不幸去世。William Smart 先生自此成了鳏夫
。在华盛顿东部的一个乡村农场中﹐他独自一人抚养大了这个新生儿和其它五个孩
子。直到成年以后﹐John B. Dodd 夫人才意识到﹐她的父亲是一个单身家长﹐在
养育儿女的过程中所付出的坚强和无私。
1910年6月19日﹐华盛顿Spokane 镇的人们庆祝了首个父亲节。大约在同一时期﹐
美国许多村镇和城市也开始庆祝一个叫做父亲节的日子。1924年﹐在美国总统
Calvin Coolidge 的支持下﹐父亲节成为全国性的节日。1966年﹐Lyndon
Johnson总统签署总统令﹐宣布将每年6月的第3个星期天定为父亲节。
现在﹐父亲节不仅是父亲的节日﹐也是所有担当父亲角色的男人的节日。继父﹐叔
父﹐祖父以及成年男性朋友﹐都因父亲节而获得荣耀。
