When I was in university, I worked at the university library as a student
assistant and I enjoyed it very much," I swear! But after earning my bachelor
degree in tourism and recreation management, I still think it’s a great
experience in here.

At that point I had worked in two very different careers and I was looking
for a place where I could integrate all my skills. I always loved the public
library. I went there almost every day to find books and information even
though I am not on duty.

I found it really valuable in my own personal life. And I saw librarianship
as a profession where I could draw upon my entire range of skills and
background.

My favorite thing is the difference we’re able to make in the community.
I feel I’m able to talk to people and help them find information for
whatever project they’re dealing with. Or in the case of young
children, watch them develop their reading skills. It’s really exciting,
and it’s important to me to work in a profession that directly serves
the community and makes it a better place to live.

The most challenging part of my job is keeping up with current technology.
The library has a responsibility to “bridge the digital divide,” For many
people, it’s the only place where they can learn about things like the
Internet. We constantly have to be on the cutting edge. I spend much of
my hours troubleshooting computers and showing people how to use them.

The easiest thing is shelving books, as long as you follow the order,
everything will be fine. I usually do it with my portable radio on. One
thing different from China and here is we have re-shelving books place.
Readers who took books out are encouraged to put their books over there
instead of try to put them back. Because once you put them into the wrong
order, it probably takes us forever to find them. Same as SZU, some students
still left books on the table and run away. I guess they don’t do it in
purpose, just too hurry. Well, I never criticize any people here. They are
all good resident here, never try to do something evil.

The most different things from our library and SZU library is we are pretty
proud, since we founded several decades. Our library never happens even one
stealing activity. Once it’s snowing, we encourage reader to put their coat
outside of our gate, just hang there. People just put their wallet
and cell phone in their coat. And then go to study in library for the
whole day. We are never informed any items lost in library. However,
we don’t even require library card to access library service. Basically,
everybody is welcome; no matter you are hookers or robbers. As long as you
want to study, taxpayer should pay you that.
