7. Platforms and System
Requirements
7.1 Which platforms does AutoCAD
Release 14 support?
AutoCAD Release 14 runs on Intel microprocessor-based
machines running Windows NT? 4.0, Windows NT 3.51, and
Windows? 95. We have no plans to support Alpha or
compatible platforms at this time. We will continue to
sell DOS, UNIX, and Windows? 3.1x versions of AutoCAD
Release 13 and/or AutoCAD Release 12 as demand
warrants.
7.2 Is AutoCAD Release 14 Microsoft
Windows "logo-compliant"?
Yes, Microsoft has endorsed Autodesk's AutoCAD Release
14 software for Windows NT 4.0/3.51 and Windows 95.
AutoCAD is one of the few design software products to
obtain the "Designed for Windows" certification.
7.3 Will Windows slow me down?
Industry benchmarks show that AutoCAD Release 14 is
typically faster across the board than AutoCAD Release
12 on DOS running on the same hardware with the same
data set. In addition to raw performance, AutoCAD
Release 14 leverages the Windows UI to provide many
time-saving usability enhancements. The solid Windows
implementation demonstrates the gains made by AutoCAD
Release 14 software's sustained focus on a 32-bit
Windows platform.
7.4 Does AutoCAD Release 14 run under
Windows 3.1?
No. AutoCAD Release 14 only supports Windows 95 and
Windows NT.
7.5 Do customers need to buy new
hardware to run AutoCAD Release 14?
AutoCAD Release 14 requires a machine capable of
running the Windows NT or Windows 95 operating
systems. Typically, this is a Pentium with 32MB of
RAM. Almost all of our customers who have made the
transition to the 32-bit Windows operating system
already have this type of computer. You shouldn't need
to purchase any additional hardware to run AutoCAD
Release 14.
The new graphics subsystem in Release 14 makes even
cheap graphics cards perform as fast as high-end
graphics cards with dedicated display list managers.
7.6 What are the system requirements
for AutoCAD Release 14?
We recommend that customers use a minimum of a Pentium
? 90MHz machine with 32MB RAM with an 800 x 600 display
resolution, and a CD-ROM drive. Less-capable machines
(such as 486-based computers) can run Release 14 as
well, but the results may be less than ideal. For more
information, refer to Recommended System Requirements.
Optimal System Configuration梂e have found under
testing that the Pentium? Pro with 64MB memory delivers
the best value for "power" AutoCAD users working with
complex drawings and heavy applications. However, if
you work with large drawings, especially those
exceeding 15MB, you may require more memory.
7.7 What guidelines do you recommend
for memory?
The optimum memory required depends on the size and
contents of the drawings being used. A white paper
discussing memory and system optimization will soon be
posted on this Web site. For information on this
topic, please read Hardware Matrix and OS.
7.8 Will AutoCAD Release 14 work with
my digitizer?
Release 14 supports many digitizers and the Wintab
interface. Contact your manufacturer for a Wintab
driver that works with Release 14.
7.9 Is AutoCAD Release 14 software
CD-ROM-based only?
Yes, with the exception of some European localized
language product.
8. Different Language Versions
8.1 When will localized versions to
ship?
French, German, Italian, Japanese (Kanji), and Spanish
are scheduled to ship within 30 days of the English
shipment; traditional Chinese and Korean within 45
days of English; and Nordic and Eastern European
languages within 90 days of the English shipment.
9. Pricing
9.1 What is the price for AutoCAD
Release 14?
US upgrades will be US$495 suggested retail price
(SRP) from Release 13 to Release 14, and US$695 from
earlier versions to Release 14. Full unit pricing will
be US$3,750 on CD-ROM. For pricing outside the US and
Canada, please contact your local Autodesk office.
Please note that functionality that used to require an
additional purchase, AutoVision? and raster imaging,
has been integrated into the core product at no extra
charge.
10. Registration and
Authorization
10.1 Do I need to obtain an
Authorization Code for AutoCAD
Release 14, similar to that required
for Release 13? Why?
Yes, an Authorization Code is required to run Release
14 (European countries excepted). The Authorization
Code process helps us record who our customers are so
we can keep you apprised of any updates to Release 14
or other relevant information in the future. Customers
in the Asia/Pacific countries will have a hardware
lock and will also require an Authorization Code to
run Release 14. You can run Release 14 for the first
30 days after purchase without an Authorization Code.
On day 31, Release 14 will not run without it.
10.2 How can I obtain an
Authorization Code?
For stand-alone versions: 30 days after
installation, the Release 14 program will no longer
run without an Authorization Code. You must obtain an
Authorization Code within this 30-day period by
calling 800-551-1490 or faxing 800-225-6490 (in the
US). In Europe and Central and South America, please
contact your local Autodesk office. For Asia/Pacific
countries, customers must send a registration card to
their dealer or to Autodesk to obtain an Authorization
Code within 30 days.
For network versions: No grace period. An
Authorization Code is needed before the AutoCAD
Release 14 program will run. This Authorization can be
obtained by calling 800-551-1490 or faxing
800-225-6490 (in the US or Canada). Outside the US and
Canada, contact your local Autodesk office. Network
Authorization uses the Elan License Manager; no
hardware lock is required (in the US).
10.3 Can I still run AutoCAD Release
14 after the 30-day grace period?
You can run Release 14 for the first 30 days without
an Authorization Code. On day 31, Release 14 will not
run without it.
10.4 What is the new CD Key and how
does it differ from my product serial
number? Is the CD Key really a
security device?
The CD Key is a mechanism to ensure that the serial
number being typed in during installation is a valid
serial number. You cannot install without the CD Key.
It is not a security device, rather it is intended to
replace the personalization disk that used to ship
with Release 13. The serial number remains Release 14
software's main identification number; the CD Key
prevents a user from typing in a random sequence of
numbers when prompted to enter a serial number during
the install process. It's important that you retain
the jewel case that contains the CD Key number in the
event they should need to re-install the software.
11. Sales
11.1 Does AutoCAD Release 14 ship on
dual media?
AutoCAD Release 14 will only be available on CD-ROM.
11.2 Is AutoCAD Release 14 available
in an AutoCAD for PCs-style
configuration in which Release 12 and
Release 13 are included in the box
with Release 14?
We currently have no plans to create a dual product
similar to AutoCAD for PCs. AutoCAD Release 14 will
not include AutoCAD Release 13 or AutoCAD Release 12.
The current AutoCAD for PCs product combining Release
13 and Release 12 will continue to be sold for users
requiring either of these products for UNIX, DOS, and
Windows 3.1 support.
11.3 What is the migration path for
an existing UNIX? user?
This has yet to be determined.
11.4 How do unregistered customers
upgrade to AutoCAD Release 14?
The same way registered customers do:
Order an upgrade from your dealer and give your
dealer the serial number of your previous
AutoCAD version
Your dealer checks the validity of the serial
number then fulfills the order from stock (or
orders a single copy from Autodesk)
When you call in for your Authorization Code, the old
serial number is marked as "upgraded" and put into our
history files so that it cannot be upgraded again. So,
it doesn't matter whether the old serial number was
previously registered or not.
11.5 How do I purchase an upgrade to
AutoCAD Release 14 if I qualify for a
different upgrade price?
Contact your Authorized Autodesk Dealer to receive the
different upgrade pricing. Dealers stock the two
different upgrade boxes for Release 14.
11.6 How is AutoCAD Release 14 sold
to the government?
Federal Government: No change from Release 13.
Government agencies purchase off the GSA schedule
through DLT Solutions, Inc., or agencies can purchase
through an Authorized Autodesk Dealer.
State and Local Government: No change from Release
13. State and local government agencies purchase
through an Authorized Autodesk Dealer or from
Autodesk, if they have a contract with Autodesk to
purchase directly.
11.7 How is AutoCAD Release 14
distributed to the education market?
Is a hardware lock required?
AutoCAD Release14 will be distributed to the
educational institution market via Area Education
Representatives (AERs). Student product will be
available upon release of the Student Version sometime
later this year. The product will follow the Release
13 education model and will be hardware locked.
11.8 Is Autodesk allowing dealers to
stock AutoCAD Release 14 upgrades?
Yes. This is similar to what Autodesk allowed for
Release 13.
12. Learning and Training
12.1 How much learning is involved
before becoming productive with
AutoCAD Release 14?
With AutoCAD Release 14, Autodesk provides an
interactive multimedia learning tool AutoCAD Learning
Assistance which should shorten the time required to
become productive with the new features in Release 14.
We've also included an online Quick Tour and What's
New. The Quick Tour is for new users and provides an
online overview of basic AutoCAD concepts and
functions. The What's New is for users upgrading from
AutoCAD Release 13 and provides an online presentation
highlighting the significant new features of AutoCAD
Release 14. More detail about the features described
in What's New can be found in the User's Guide and in
the Command Reference.
12.2 What is AutoCAD Learning
Assistance?
AutoCAD Learning Assistance is a multimedia learning
tool meant to provide on-demand education for
experienced AutoCAD users. Designed for Release 12 DOS
users moving to a Windows environment for the first
time with Release 14 and Release 13 Windows users
upgrading to Release 14, the Learning Assistance CD
that ships with Release 14 contains over 50 tutorials
on new features and user-interface elements present in
Release 14.
New users can take advantage of this learning tool to
become familiar with specific features and concepts
present in Release 14. New users can also see an
online overview of basic AutoCAD concepts and
functions in the Quick Tour. The AutoCAD Learning
Assistance does not, however, attempt to help
transition customers accustomed to paper-based drawing
to CAD.
12.3 What training support is
available for AutoCAD Release 14? How
can customers obtain training?
Customers can obtain training through Autodesk
Training Center (ATC?) locations around the world.
