不知该如何分区? 有什么要注意的吗?

like first have three partitions
It depends on the size of each partition then
If I were u, I might partition like this
1-->win98
2-->solaris
3-->linux
4-->extend win98/ some others
or you can put 3 4 all to extend win98
then, put lilo to MBR
every should just run!

因为Linux至少要占用两个分区，那么Win98和w2k只好在一个分区上了。
Solaris不知道，不过你得期望只需要一个分区就可以了。
一个硬盘最多只能有四个分区的。

不能吧，它是partition啊，在linux里，/dev/hd5那就是您老的第一个logical
partition, 您要是在DOS里想建个D盘在上面，那D盘是logical drive
我在linux里根本没有logical drive呀

heihei...thomas还是学计算机的，这都会搞错。
一个硬盘可以有很多分区，但是只能有四个主分区。象NT, Win2K, Linux什么的都
可以装在扩展分区上。Win9x不知道。

那你得先装NT和Win2K啦。另外好象Win9x和Win2K之类的是不能够装在一个
逻辑盘上的。
Partition就是指主分区，Dos下有两种：primary和extend，后者可以有多
个逻辑驱动器；linux通常都需要一个swap区和一个主引导区。虽然主引导
区可以装到dos的extend的一个逻辑驱动器上。
当然你朋友可以多试试，因为我也没有这样子装过的说。特别是不知道Solaris
的情况。

if you don't want the LILO in MBR.

Linux的/boot我没有装过在扩展分区上，但是应该没有问题。Win2K是装过的。

That's just DOS notation. What's Logical drive under Linux?
If you know how extended partitions are organized, you should know logical
drive is actually a partition and extended partition is actually a partition
linked list.

3. RedHat 6.1 CD
4. PQ Magic 4.01
而且准备过一阵子装w2k.
用什么东西分? 具体该怎么分?

逻辑盘号的。
我觉得在linux及其它下而都是作为文件系统挂上的吧，这和partition
可能又不一样啦。

是一回事
Partition, primary partition, extended partition, logical partition or logi
cal drives: A partition is a subsection of the disk which starts right after
the preceding partition table sector, and ends at the end of the drive or w
ith the last sector preceding the next partition table sector. For DOS, only
a primary partition can be bootable, and always get "lower" drive letters a
ssigned than other partitions do. This explains why people have C: and E: on
their primary and D: and F: on their secondary drive. An Extended Partition
is used to store Logical Partitions or Logical Drives in. Generally DOS/Win
dows-compatible partitions are referred to as FAT-partitions.

software required. My suggestion is leave the MBR untouched,
Solaris/FreeBSD will install boot loader on their own partition,
NT will install it's boot loader on C:. I think the only problem
you might encounter is the booting of Solaris. The installation program
of Solaris will set its partition to Active, sometimes if you change
the Active Part. to other partition, Solaris can't boot(even if you
use NT Loader or LILO to load Solaris's boot sector).
You can try it, Solaris will have updated version every several months,
you had better get the latest version from Sun for $10, maybe this will
give you less trouble.

Let's first forget about Win2K
Actually, I have no idea about that. sorry.
Then, here's what I mean
since u have a free harddisk and all three CDs
you can start like this!
first use solaris that floppy and CD boot the machine
install solaris in first 2G. should be enough
then,
use win98 CD boot
install win98 in next 2G, should also be enough
use linux floppy & CD boot the machine
create a 2G partition and leave it for win2K
then create an extended with all other space left.
then, create a logical partition with 2G for linux root/
then, create a logical partition with 128M for linux swap
all left over, do what u want! u can create another logical with all leftover
then later on format it as dos
Then, at least everyone can see it.
that's my thinking, hopefully, it will help.

Linux swap is not necessary for most people if your memory
is not terribly small. Set it during installation, and you
can latter delete it. If not frequently used, you can also
set swapfiles instead, which is more flexible.
mkdir /usr/local/swap
cd /usr/local/swap
dd if=/dev/zero of=swap1 bs=1024 count=130752
mkswap swap1
sync
swapon swap1

难道在用solaris floppy boot的以前不需要先分区吗? 用什么分?
不分的话,怎么告诉solaris只用2G呢?
对win98也是同样的问题?

前面五步是怎么样建 swapfile.
最后的swapon 是手工加 swap.
当然也可以手工减 swapoff swap1.
注意要 chmod go-rwx swap1 for security.
要自动的话加入 /etc/fstab

不能吧，它是partition啊，在linux里，/dev/hd5那就是您老的第一个logical
partition, 您要是在DOS里想建个D盘在上面，那D盘是logical drive

一个硬盘可以有很多分区，但是只能有四个主分区。象NT, Win2K, Linux什么的都
可以装在扩展分区上。Win9x不知道。

那你得先装NT和Win2K啦。另外好象Win9x和Win2K之类的是不能够装在一个
逻辑盘上的。
Partition就是指主分区，Dos下有两种：primary和extend，后者可以有多
个逻辑驱动器；linux通常都需要一个swap区和一个主引导区。虽然主引导
区可以装到dos的extend的一个逻辑驱动器上。
当然你朋友可以多试试，因为我也没有这样子装过的说。特别是不知道Solaris
的情况。

you can use the NT boot loader to do the job
if you don't want the LILO in MBR.

Linux的/boot我没有装过在扩展分区上，但是应该没有问题。Win2K是装过的。

That's just DOS notation. What's Logical drive under Linux?
If you know how extended partitions are organized, you should know logical
drive is actually a partition and extended partition is actually a partition
linked list.

而且准备过一阵子装w2k.
用什么东西分? 具体该怎么分?

既然是在谈partiton，我个人不认为把logical drivers和partition
说成一样是合适的。当然都是作为一个文件系统挂到linux上的，这是

确实让我奇怪了一阵的。因为刚开始我是用FreeBSD来做的，就不是这
样，而是用hda1?来说明，其中的1是指扩展区的号，而?则是指具体的
逻辑盘号的。
我觉得在linux及其它下而都是作为文件系统挂上的吧，这和partition
可能又不一样啦。

大哥，您就别鸡蛋里挑骨头了，来给您老引一段字典里的话。咱们说的
是一回事
Partition, primary partition, extended partition, logical partition or logi
cal drives: A partition is a subsection of the disk which starts right after
the preceding partition table sector, and ends at the end of the drive or w
ith the last sector preceding the next partition table sector. For DOS, only
a primary partition can be bootable, and always get "lower" drive letters a
ssigned than other partitions do. This explains why people have C: and E: on
their primary and D: and F: on their secondary drive. An Extended Partition
is used to store Logical Partitions or Logical Drives in. Generally DOS/Win
dows-compatible partitions are referred to as FAT-partitions.

呵呵，说明你不了解什么是partition，仅仅是从字面上理解而已。知道为什么只能有
四个主分区（包括扩展分区）么？
从结构上说，Drive C, Drive D, Drive E没有什么不同。扩展分区只是用来突破四个
主分区的限制而已，实际上本身并不是一个实体。打个类比，就好比一个链表，所有的
drives对应数据域，扩展分区只是个指针而已。

(or you can put Solaris/FreeBSd after the extened partition, but
I don't know if Solaris 7 can handle the >8G partition, you had better
put it before 8G, Linux/FreeBSD has no problem with 8G limit)
Most UNIX(like SCO Unixware/Openseerver, Solaris, FreeBSD) needs
primary partition to install. In this case, you can install one
additional hard drive and have lots of OS on your machine :)
You can use Win2K"s boot loader or LILO to load these OS, no other
software required. My suggestion is leave the MBR untouched,
Solaris/FreeBSD will install boot loader on their own partition,
NT will install it's boot loader on C:. I think the only problem
you might encounter is the booting of Solaris. The installation program
of Solaris will set its partition to Active, sometimes if you change
the Active Part. to other partition, Solaris can't boot(even if you
use NT Loader or LILO to load Solaris's boot sector).
You can try it, Solaris will have updated version every several months,
you had better get the latest version from Sun for $10, maybe this will
give you less trouble.

Let's first forget about Win2K
Actually, I have no idea about that. sorry.
Then, here's what I mean
since u have a free harddisk and all three CDs
you can start like this!
first use solaris that floppy and CD boot the machine
install solaris in first 2G. should be enough
then,
use win98 CD boot
install win98 in next 2G, should also be enough
use linux floppy & CD boot the machine
create a 2G partition and leave it for win2K
then create an extended with all other space left.
then, create a logical partition with 2G for linux root/
then, create a logical partition with 128M for linux swap
all left over, do what u want! u can create another logical with all leftover
then later on format it as dos
Then, at least everyone can see it.
that's my thinking, hopefully, it will help.

Linux swap is not necessary for most people if your memory
is not terribly small. Set it during installation, and you
can latter delete it. If not frequently used, you can also
set swapfiles instead, which is more flexible.
mkdir /usr/local/swap
cd /usr/local/swap
dd if=/dev/zero of=swap1 bs=1024 count=130752
mkswap swap1
sync
swapon swap1

难道在用solaris floppy boot的以前不需要先分区吗? 用什么分?
不分的话,怎么告诉solaris只用2G呢?

前面五步是怎么样建 swapfile.
最后的swapon 是手工加 swap.
当然也可以手工减 swapoff swap1.
注意要 chmod go-rwx swap1 for security.
要自动的话加入 /etc/fstab
/usr/local/swap/swap1 swap swap defaults 0 0
