Q: So what is GNOME?
A: The initials stand for GNU Network Object Model Environment. This doesn't
really help explain what it does, though. GNOME is a part of the GNU Projec
t and an attempt to make a desktop environment which is free software, which

runs on lots of platforms;
is consistent so that you use the same approach to do the same tasks in diff
erent programs;
can be used by developers to develop software easily;
is fun to use.

What is KDE?
KDE is the K Desktop Environment. It is a project initiated by Matthias Ett
rich in 1996. The aim of the KDE project is to connect the power of the UNIX

In short, KDE will bring UNIX? to the desktop!
