Volume License Product Keys

Microsoft is committed to the protection of intellectual property rights
and to the reduction of software piracy worldwide. Though Microsoft
includes product activation technology in some products sold through OEM
or retail channels, licenses acquired through one of Microsoft's volume
licensing programs are not required to be activated. Volume license
customers must input a Volume License Product Key (VLK) when
installing from volume license media to bypass product activation.

Deploying with Volume Licensing Product Keys and Media
Volume License media for impacted products will no longer include a
pre-configured Product ID or a Product Key on the CD packaging. The
appropriate volume license product key must be used for desktop or
network administrator installs.

Additionally, retail product CDs (for example, boxed product purchased
from a retail outlet) can no longer be used for multiple installations.
If you currently use CDs from a retail product kit for installations,
these processes will affect your installation procedures. Volume License
or Microsoft? MSDN? media acquired through Volume License are the
only media available for multiple installations. These media will
require the use of a Volume License Product Key that will be assigned to
your company or institution.

The Volume License Product Key is assigned to your company or
institution and is intended for your company or institution's sole use.
You should take reasonable and appropriate measures to ensure that this
product key is used only to install and distribute licenses pursuant to
the terms of your agreement.

Individual applications installed from an Office XP product executable
require the Office XP Suite VLK.
Individual Office 2002 family applications installed using their own
installation executable require the Office XP Application VLK.
Office 2000 Service Release 1 and Microsoft Project 2000 Service Release
1 only require the VLK when installed or duplicated from Microsoft
Worldwide Fulfillment (WWF) media CDs. Select CDs are unaffected.
VLKs for Office 2000 SR-1 and Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1 are required
only when used with the following languages: English, Brazilian,
Portuguese, and Traditional Chinese in one of the following countries:
Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the People's Republic
of China, and the United States.

Windows XP SP-1 Changes
Windows XP SP-1 contains the following changes of importance to
customers using VLKs:

Eligibility for Windows XP SP-1
Eligibility for access to Windows Update
Ability to encrypt a VLK for unattended setup of Windows XP

This functionality is also included in Windows Server 2003 Family
products.
