I have recently encountered the same problem. I had SQL Server 6.5 installed on
my NT WorkStation,and it was running fine. Then I uninstalled it, then I could
not reinstall it.
I called MicroSoft, and they charge $195.00 per incident for these things, so I
bit the bullet and learned
several things. It is incredible that they don't even support SQL Server for
installation. I am angry
about this and am writing a letter to their Advocacy Dept. You can get this
address from their
Customer Service Dept. if you like.
Here is a description of what you have to do, if you don't' feel comfortable wit
h
this then you should
call for the service, too. It is per incident, so they will be with you for the
duration, for only one
charge. I am not paid by Microsoft, nor do I give support for their products, so
I can not guarantee
any of this. Please, read my entire message before attempting any of this to mak
e
sure that you are
comfortable with it:
First, back up your Registry and any data you want to save that may be in SQL
Server.
Second, you should delete the keys in the registry which are for MSSQLServer and
SQLExecutive. Do
a search for these, they are located in HKLM/Software/Microsoft and you should b
e
careful to ONLY
delete the keys that say exactly MSSQLServer and SQLExecutive. My registry only
had each one
listed twice, and I deleted both of them. Yours may be different.
Now reboot. Go to My Computer|Control Panel|Services and see that the services
for SQL Server are
NOT there.
You need to install the MS Loopback Adapter Device, which you can find under the
Network Neighborhood|Properties|Adapters tab. Next, you need to go to My
Computer|Control
Panel|Services and shut down Server, and the Workstation services.
DO NOT reboot. Then, try to reinstall SQL Server and you should have more luck.
SQLServer gave me an error message during install that said that Workstation was
not running, but went
through the install anyway. Before trying his suggestions, three other times it
would refuse to continue
through to the end. Now, it is up and running fine.
The technical support engineer who I talked to said that in addition to
installing SQLServer again, that I
should UNinstall ALL Visual Studio tools and then REinstall them in order for
them to get their "HOOKS"
set up to SQL Server (his words). I have not had time to do this. I wanted to
make sure I could get
SQL Server up and running first, before I tried to reinstall all of
VisualStudio97.
Why didn't I have to do ANY of this the first time I installed SQLServer? Good
question. :-)
Now, for the not so bad news. This install is all I have gotten so far. I still
need to talk to my support
engineer about the Service Pack 4 installation, which fails under ALL of these
precautions to get
the initial install going.
I will write back to this list after I talk to him and get this Service Pack
installed.

Your machine will have to be on a network during the install of SQL Server.
After that you can remove the machine from the network and work stand alone.
There is suppose to be a way to install SQL Server on a machine not on a
network, but I don't remember the procedure and I never did get it to work.
This seems to work fine. I have been running a machine for about 1 year
after installing while on a network. Sorry I have not got the answer, but a
work around is better then nothing!

Actually, it doesn't need to be on a network. I installed it on my
machine at home with no problems at all - and to tell you the truth, I
don't remember having to do anything different. I also have a SQL
server at work as well as having it local on my development machine.
I know this sounds dumb, but have you:
-Tried opening up the SQL Server Manager and "add" your machine to the
list of registered servers?
-created a System DSN in the ODBC Manager?
-try getting to the database using access?

Thanks you guys (Charles and Stuart). I do have my SQL working now. My
problem was part bone-head and I had a problem with an Executive related
DLL. When I reinstalled I selected autostart and sure enough my
problems were solved. Someone else suggested manually doing the same
thing which I finally have figured out and will probably do in the
future as I don't need SQL all the time on my PC.
Now I'm interested in what I can do with it. I got the book "Inside SQL
6.5..." from MS Press. It's a bit more in-depth than I wanted but I
also know that I should learn the foundations if I'm ever going to be
really good at it. So, I'll probably work at understanding as much of
it as possible over time.
I also downloaded the interesting parts of the SQL Server Developers
Kit. This is a start. If anybody has any more advise it would be
appreciated.

actually, working with a local SQL database can be a little misleading
(as well as working with a Pentium II 333 w/ 128 mb ram :)
My development environment is awfully fast... and then I wonder why its
so damn slow when I install it on a "normal" machine (P166 w 32mb ram)
that one of our customer's would be using.
