I've derived a CDAORecordSet and set its SQL string to something like this:

PARAMETERS [FamilyIDFilter] TEXT; SELECT Names.[FirstName], Names.[LastName]
FROM (Families RIGHT JOIN Names ON Families.FamilyID = Names.FamilyID) WHERE
Names.[FamilyID] Like [FamilyIDFilter];

The [FamilyIDFilter] parameter is set during a DataExchange function within
the CDAORecordSet object.

Here's my problem:
I want the recordset to select either a specified family name or ANY family
name. In MS Access, this SQL statement displays an input box. If the user
keys ' * ' the query selects all records. But when I've tried to implement
the same thing here, I get a run-time exception that says "Data type
mismatch in criteria expression."

I think I need to define my parameter as text in order to pass it the
wildcard ' * ' character; however, the field Names.[FamilyID] is defined in
the table as Long.

Is this where I'm going wrong?

DAO help says "Like *" is a valid expression. How can I pass the wildcard as
a parameter if the data type is Long? I guess I could skip the PARAMETER
step and build a SELECT statement dynamically if I have to.

But why can't I get this to work? HELP!

Do you want to use the MFC framework? If not, create a new 'console'
project and start from the ground up - like a simple DOS / C program. If
you're using MFC, have you worked your way through the Scribble tutorial?
And/or any others? If so, why not work backwards through that program's
code gradually replacing the graphic specific code with your own? Or you
could grab a skeletal program and incorporate your own stuff - look up
HELLO and HELLOAPP in the docs.

One last word. Don't feel dispirited at your apparent lack of progress.
Everything I have _ever_ read on the subject of starting out has been at
best desperately humorous, at worst downright gloomy. When you feel
yourself plummeting down that most slippery of slopes, the OO learning
curve, take heart! You're definitely in the majority!
