Frequently Asked Questions
Is my video card supported? If not, how do I use SoftICE for Windows
95 or Windows NT?
A list of supported boards and chips is in the SoftICE User Guide.
However, it is difficult to determine a priori whether a card is
supported, due to the frequency of board revisions. As an example, one
popular video card has shipped at various times with 17 distinct
RAMDACs (the RAMDAC is a component typically responsible for the
color-lookup-table, digital->analog conversion, and cursor support),
and has undergone revision to the main graphics chip as well.
You can still use SoftICE for Windows 95 even if your video card
doesn't work. Several options are available:
1、Set the Windows 95 video driver to Standard VGA, and at the same
time set the SoftICE for Windows 95 video driver to Standard VGA. This
almost always works.
2、Employ a secondary monochrome (MDA or Hercules-compatible) adapter
and monitor. Yes, you can still purchase these (in North America, see the
Computer Shopper magazine for vendors). The monochrome adapter
coexists with almost all video cards and is an excellent solution.
3、Connect to another machine via the serial port. This can be a handy
solution if you have another machine at your disposal. The remote
machine runs SERIAL.EXE, an MSDOS program provided with SoftICE for
Windows 95.
