Basic tutorial - 08-08-01

This is a basic tutorial to help inform newbies of basically accepted
rules,practices,and some suggestions for use on the fxp scene.

1.What is FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP
protocols. FTP is commonly used to
transfer files on the Internet. FTP servers will let you to both
download (retrieve a file from
the server) and upload (send a file to the server) files from the
server, to access an FTP
server, users must connect to the Network and an FTP client program.
Normally, The FTP server runs continuously in the background and listens
to port 21 for a
connection request from an FTP client. When an FTP client requests
connection, the FTP server
verifies the logon user ID and password, and, if valid, it opens a
data connection. After a user
logs on, their access to the FTP host's file system is determined by
permissions assigned to
directories and folders.

2.What is FXP (File eXchange Protocol )

FXP is a term adopted by earlier clients which provided site to site FTP

transfers. Simplifying the process of transferring files from one server
to
another. FXP transfers can greatly expedite a large file transfer, by
utilizing
the bandwidth between the sending and receiving servers, rather than
downloading
the file from one server to your PC and uploading it to another server.

Although FXPing is very easy, there are a few restrictions to
transferring the
files. Both hosts have to support PASV mode and must allow PORT commands
to
foreign hosts. The FXP client tells the destination FTP to listen for
a
connection by sending a "PASV" command. The source FTP then connects
to the data
port reported by the destination server (after a success PASV command).
So all
the data goes directly from the source to the destination FTP and both
servers
do only report status messages on fail/success to the FTP client. At
least one
of the two remote hosts has to be a non-NT FTP-server, like a UNIX
host or
anything else. You can move files from a non-NT FTP-server to a NT
FTP-server
and the other way around, but you CANNOT FXP from a NT to an NT. One way
to get
by this limitation is using a Wingate.

Because FXP transfers are considered a security risk, many servers do
not
support it or optionally decline to do so. Which ones are FXPable? For
WinNT
fxpables are rare. Most are Unix. Apple servers are rare as well, but
can
support fxp, as do many SunOS. The best way to use them is as a
holding area for
your pub building. Don't leave them empty, they take a while to fill.
Also try
to grab pubs along the same backbone for using as holding areas.
The communication between these pubs and the fxp will be noticably
faster than
to elsewhere.

3.What is PUB (Public FTP)

Anonymous FTP allows people to log into your FTP server as the user
anonymous. require to enter
Email address as the password. Normally, PUB is the FTP Server which
anonymous user have read and
write access files on the host. (of course, you don't have read and/or
write access to every file
on the system, and some files you can't even see). It can be used to
temporary store and distribute warez by FXP Group.

4.What is PRIVATE (Member FTP)

Private FTP Site belong to a member, Behave yourself there, the sysop
actually
donates part of his p.c. and his bandwidth for your pleasure. Don't
hammer it or
login many times, you are not the only one. Do not throw around
passwords and
logins, its the sysops decision who gets access.

5.What is DUMP (Group FTP)

Dump is used by fxp groups to store warez they want to pub later or keep
as
backup to do missing file requests. using ServU, WarFTP or G6 FTP-server
progs.

6.What is SCAN (Find Pubs)

Use a Port Scanner to scan the Internet for PUB . Scan is both a tedious
and necessary task for the FXP Groups. Fortunately, there are
lots of methods out there that can make the job a lot less menial and
lots more
productive. The easiest way of finding pubs is using Grim's Ping.
It can also check the permissions.

7.What is CHECK (Check Pubs)

Check all the found Pubs' state. Do not connect to a pub with CuteFtp
then take
a quick look around and assume the pub is not being used. It is your
responsibility to thoroughly check the pub. Use an ftp client such as
SmartFtp or LeechFtp
that will view most of directories. The important thing to do is test
the fxp state and speed.

8.What is TAG (Tag Pubs)

When tagging your pub use a recognizable tag it should include the board
name or
if you are not tagging for a specific board the your own name.
Tagged pubs can't be tagged for more than 14 days. After 14 days the pub
is available for
everyone again. Only if the builder haven't re-tagged it. No
re-tagging is
allowed before the 14 days time limit expires.

9.What is FILL (Fill Pubs)

Do not make your pubs to big. Do not overfill pubs.
What do I mean overfill, Always try and leave at least
a few hundred megs minimum on a pub.
Never tamper with files or dirs that are originally there
Work in a subdir, never in the root.

10.What is RULES (Basically accepted rules)

There are a few Rules to make fxp scene workable.

Do not upload to posted pubs without the builder's permission.
Do not remove files without the builder's permission.
Do not post re-post pubs without the builder's permission.

11.What is a deleter (Enemy of the Pub)

Deleters are very sad people who gain pleasure from deleting all the
contents of
public FTP sites before anyone has the chance to download anything.
For some
reason they feel proud of their efforts and so leave a calling card
behind in
the form of a file or directory named after themselves. Among those
typically
accused of being deleters include rival FXP groups, Sys Ops (see
glossary),
warez CD dealers, naive ftp newbies, selfish and impatient leechers
and anti-piracy organisations
