Virus Characteristics
Cabanas was written by a 15 year old virus writer from Venezuela (who, at the ag
e of 14, wrote the WM/Cap virus, a very common `in the wild' macro virus). The a
uthor calls himself Jacky Qwerty (`j4cKy Qw3rTy').
The source code of this virus has been circulated in the virus writing undergrou
nd (this is one of the reasons why we would anticipate the appearance of many ne
w variants of the virus).
The virus infects executable files in PE format and is able to spread successful
ly under Windows 95 and Windows NT (this was the first virus able to spread unde
r Windows NT).
Win32/Cabanas is a per-process resident virus. This means that when the infected
program is run, even in background, other programs will become infected until t
his program terminates. If the command interpreter becomes infected, the virus i
s permanently resident (the command interpreter's process terminates only at shu
tdown).
The b-d variants are debug versions of the virus - they display various message-
boxes when run. The .a and .e variants spread silently and do not contain any vi
sible strings.
