I had recieved a virus via email and didn't open it. I deleted it off my
system (so I thought) using NAV. But noooo.... stupid XP actually SAVES your
info in a hidden folder called SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION. The stupid folder
is NON ACCESSIBLE too so if you get a virus and it ends up in that folder
it's "almost impossible" to get rid of it. It's not impossible to open the
hidden folder but more of a pain to do so. And NAV won't be able to get rid
of the virus if it's in THAT folder.
To open the stupid folder you need to do the following: (this only works if
your partition is NTSF and not FAT32)
1) Reboot and after you get past your bios hit F8 then select SAFE MODE.
2) Once in safe mode, click on START then RUN then type EXPLORER.
3) Click on TOOLS then FOLDER OPTIONS then VIEW. Select SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS AND
FILES and uncheck HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES.
4) When SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION is unhidden RIGHT CLICK it and click on
PROPERTIES then SECURITIES. Add your name to it (the name you use to log onto
your system) and click CHECK NAMES. If it's a valid name it'll be added to
the list. THEN make sure you give yourself FULL ACCESS. Click OK
5) You either enter the SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION in safe mode now or in
regular mode. So either reboot the system or continue on.
6) Open NAV or your what ever anti-virus you're using and scan the folder. I
usually do this part in reg mode. NAV will detect and remove the virus from the
folder now and fix any problems with your hard drive if other stuff was
damaged and is repairable.
That's basically it. I REALLY REALLY don't recommend getting XP. It's cute,
less problems (except alot of FAT16 programs that worked in 98 won't work
even under compatibility mode) but has too many problems. Many of my hardware
(like tv card, scanner and dvd) won't work on XP since the drivers haven't been
updated yet. And if the company of that software is out of business (like my
Chieftain scanner) then you're SOL in getting XP drivers.

How to delet viruses from your computer.
1) Back up your important data
2) Format the computer to remove all traces of the "microsoft" virus (the
most dangerous) and any other viruses.
3) Install an operating system not vulnerable to the "virus of the day".
4) Be much happier, especially since you no longer are constantly pulling out
your hair over the deadly "micorsoft" virus.
I REALLY REALLY don't recommend getting XP. It's cute, less problems (except

XP has worked like a dream for my boyfriend and I. It actually fixed a lot
of problems he had before with 98SE
As for me, *pats navi* good ol' trusty Mac OS 9

Formatting is not so easy in XP. No more DOS so can't simply shut down into
dos mode and type format C:. You have to restart the machine making sure you
inserted your XP cd. Boot from the cd and follow all the directions. The good
news is that partitioning is a snap in XP but you have to go through the
whole setup process before you get to the partitioning.
I'm using it simply because I had no choice. LOL My 98SE disks (I had several
legit copies) were scratched up to the point that several .CAB files were
corrupted. So installing 98SE after a format was virtually impossible at the
time. So needless to say I had to install XP. Yes I still have 98SE installed
but that was only AFTER I installed XP. I found a burnt copy made after two
98SE legit copies were used as frisbees [kids] a year back. I burnt two
copies from my remaining 98 cds (I had four or five but one was 98 and not 98SE
and another was a 98 upgrade from 95). Now I have one burnt (backup) copy of
98SE, one copy of XP and a copy of 98 and 98 upgrade along with a copy 95.
XP is sllllllloooooowwwwwwlllllyyyyy growing on me except I still haven't
been able to make heads or tails of the registry. I barely figured out 98's
registry!! LOL

Something that leaves you bald is growing on you?
There are two big reason I would never use XP:
1. It still looks ugly. If I'm going to stare at it for hours a day, it
should look somewhat pretty.
2. There are other operating systems that can probably do the same thing for
a lot less. XP stands for eXtra Pricy after all. (or maybe eXtra hair
Pulling?)
