Diploma in Management Studies
Certificate in Management (Voluntary and Community Organisations)
The Certificate in Management and the Diploma in Management Studies form
a Postgraduate,post-experience management qualification,and were originally
developed in parallel with the Management Chater Initiative.
The two-year programme is designed for managers who wish to improve their
qualifications and at the same time develop their managerial roles from junior,
through middle to senior management.It also forms the basis for the Masters in
Business Administration(MBA)programme and many successful participants
(normally those who achieve 60% or more during their DMS year )have programmed
directly to Stage 2 of the MBA.
If you wish to acquire an initial management qualification,then the
Certificate in Management (CM-Year 1)is an ideal choice. The Diploma in
Management Studies(DMS-Year 2)is recommended for those who possess either
the Certificate in Management,or have a portfolio of relevant work experience
which can be accredited via the University's Assessment of Prior Learning
scheme. Approximately 80% students completing our CM programme directly to
the DMS.
The CM aims to train you as a manager to be most effiective in your
current work environment,and also to help you accumulate skills-which will
be valuable throughout the whole of your career-across a range of organisations
and functions.We place emphasis on developing your skills of communication and
your ablilty to make rational argument.Your studies will also include areas
like managing information,managing resources,both human and finacial,and
understanding marketing and organisations.
Both the CM and the DMS include a residential weekend which involve
simulated management activities.
The DMS leads dirtecty on form the CM, forming the second year of the
programme.Whilst the DMS is still concerned with developing your personal
competencies,your studies will also concentrate on giving you a greater
understanding of the theory behind core aspects of management,including
marketing,quality,strategy and change.You will explore in more depth an
area of particular interest to you through the choice of an option and
you will also complete an individual project.
